The inspiration for the Isles of Wonder Store came from years of garment sourcing by our founder Stewart Aldred. Primarily he held sourcing roles in Hong Kong, Philadelphia and London and he would regularly travel through Asia, Turkey and Eastern Europe. Whilst he loved travelling he rarely saw any of the countries apart from the inside of a soulless factory.
On returning home to Harrogate, Stewart was energised by the creative community and entrepreneurial spirit in the town. What resonated with Stewart was the juxtaposition of a factory production line with the entrepreneurs of the UK. The comparison between having a passion for the product and being sat on a production line were poles apart.
Stewart therefore vowed to carefully curate top quality goods from independent British artisans and put them in a unique retail environment, the “Isles of Wonder Store”. Here, every product would be made with an individual’s passion and each with a unique story to tell.
Our understated store concept reflects the pride and philosophy of British design throughout. It excites and engages a consumer who is inspired by British style; its history, its trademarks and its inspired reinventions.
Having been away from Harrogate for 10 years, the Montpellier Quarter immediately struck a chord with us as the destination for our first store. The area has a personality and spirit all of its own, with local brands and businesses alike, each with a story to tell, thriving there. It was important for us that the Isles of Wonder Store would be in the heart of this independent shopping destination, which has a real buzz about it.
Whilst we are patriotic, our stores will not be about flag waving. Our uniquely British brand partners have been hand-selected to deliver celebrated and emerging products synonymous with a universal design currency, a lifestyle and attitude that continues to combine quality and authenticity with the contemporary and the new.
The Isles of Wonder Store wants to celebrate the doers, the thinkers, the entrepreneurs who’ve brought their products to market, many from a backroom or studio. We wanted to create a unique proposition in Harrogate and that is what is attractive about siting our store in the Montpellier Quarter and not with the the ubiquitous national retailers in the centre of town.
